Child labour is one social malady which has continued to remain over the generations, in spite of the government enforcing laws and framing policies against child labour,. It only goes to show that our society, is so much involved with day to day red building activities, that it neglects this very important and integral part of the obligation to society, that is giving our children an opportunity, a chance for them to nurture their skills, develop their personalities, and empowers them through education Child labour generally speaking, is work that harms or exploits children in some way; be it physical treatment, moral exploitation or by blocking access to education. We know not all work can be bad for the child, delivering newspapers before school could be an earnest part-time remuneration for young children. But taking work from children at an early age of 5 to 6 years, at which stage the physical and social development of the child is very important. In a developing society like ours, we see children work as mechanics, in hotels, make footwear, textiles and many more. While the boys work outside, the girls work as maids at a neighbouring houses, this exposes them and makes them vulnerable so that they can be easily sexually abused.

Garbage is being dumped indiscriminately in Srinivagilu, near Ejipura junction. While a frequent traveller is usually inured to the sight of the garbage-filled stretch of land, the rains have made it difficult to ignore. The rain seems to have speeded up the degradation process, besides forming a slurry of dirt underneath. The surface area covered by the garbage also seems to be increasing.

Water isn’t the only thing clogging our roads this rainy season. Roads remain immobile with all the vehicles moving at snail’s pace. All roads in and out of Koramangala were blocked last week, a situation made only worse by the incessant rain. Traffic trouble zones were the Inner Ring Road junction, Sarjapur Road, Outer Ring Road junction and NIMHANS. The potholes seemed to have split open wider and drains spilt their contents over onto the roads.

Koramangala has always been a popular place for Bangalore's youngsters. This is not surprising given the advantages the area enjoys in terms of infrastructure, connectivity and cleanliness. One of the greener parts of a city that is being fast eroded of its tree cover, it also helps that Koramangala is chalk-full of hangout places of all kinds, including restaurants, coffee shops and watering holes. Malls like Forum make for not only after-work relaxation, but easy shopping too. Two major IT companies, Infosys and Wipro, have their offices here and in Electronic City, thus attracting the young IT crowd to the apartments here.

When Dickens said, ‘skewered through and through with office-pens, and bound hand and foot with red tape’ he was talking about bureaucrats’ love of administrative filing which inevitably lead to an incapability to get anything done. Yet never can one presume to know the complex workings of someone’s mind. More so, in the case of the Local authorities, who move in mysterious ways. In one such a fit of benevolence, someone decided to do something about one of the bad roads in Koramangala. This spot is located in Jakkasandra, near the Outer Ring Road. The most kind thing one can say about it is that it is not damaged in some places where it is merely filled with stones and gravel. It seems to have garnered some attention however.

Overflowing sewage and storm-water drains are a common sight in HSR Layout 4th Sector, near Oxford College burial ground next to the Titan Showroom. Drains overflow, leaving the solid contents on the streets, and sewage water enters the storm-water drain, making it all the more difficult for the public to bear the stench and water-logging. The channel has been completely blocked as someone has been pumping sewage into the storm-water drain. The problem is compounded whenever it rains with water flowing on to the road. Stagnant water sites become mosquito breeding grounds posing a health hazard. The residents dread the monsoon season as it will cause even more problems. The channel flowing from BTS depot has been blocked for the last two years. No interest has been shown by the BBMP to clear the channel. Local residents and restaurant owners dump their wastes into the channel; it results in a foul smell and unhygienic atmosphere. Parts of the area get filled up to knee level. This is all happening because of the negligence of the authorities concerned who have not cleaned the channel and drains properly.

The annual Independence Day celebrations were celebrated with pomp and splendor at the government school at Agara.BBMP corporator, K. Latha was the chief guest for the flag hoisting ceremony at the school. In the 65th year of Independence we have different types of people, religion, languages spoken, caste and we have to understand and integrate all their problems to live harmoniously. Today's children are tomorrow's citizens. You could also contribute to the development of the nation like Gandhiji and Nehru if you follow the ideals and teachings. Three of the students addressed the remaining in three different languages Kannada, English and in Hindi. Next to speak was the SDMC secretary Narsimhamurty who exhorted the students by regaling them with stories of Gandhi 65 years ago. We still have a modern-day Gandhi in the form of Anna Hazare who is fighting selflessly to end corruption to benefit the common man. We have to join hands to fight corruption. There are many reasons for corruption in the country and we the common people are also responsible in institutionalizing the same. We should specifically fight corruption in the political system. Nowadays, for all the elections from the gram panchayat onwards, to the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, thousands of crores are being spent. This has become one of the biggest businesses in India today rather than a service to the common man. It is also the duty of the common man to avoid voting for cash and to what for the right candidate based on merits.
